Choosing the perfect wedding venue is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day. As a photographer, I know firsthand how much your venue impacts the quality and feel of your wedding photos. The right space not only sets the mood and style of your celebration, but also provides the backdrop that will carry your memories for a lifetime. When deciding what to consider when choosing your wedding venue, it’s so important to keep your photography vision in mind.

Here are several key things to consider when selecting your wedding venue. These all hold true, and ultimately influence the outcome of how your photos turn out (so choose wisely)!

What to Consider When Choosing A Wedding Venue

1. Plan for the Weather: Always Ask About the Rain Plan

As much as we hope for clear skies, weddings don’t always get perfect weather. From a photography standpoint, a good rain plan is essential.

Why? Because lighting changes dramatically outdoors with overcast skies or rain. If your venue doesn’t have a solid rain plan, it can limit where we capture your photos.

Pro tip: Visit the venue during a rainy day or cloudy afternoon to see how the lighting feels and where photos could happen. I’ve photographed weddings at coastal venues where a quick move indoors, clear umbrellas or under a covered porch saved the day. Not to mention, the photos still came out stunning and full of emotion. It also pays to be open to clear umbrellas!

Example:
Photo from a rainy day wedding at The Bohlin in Newport where the couple embraced the showers under clear umbrellas for their first look. It was one of my favorite shots of the day.

2. Consider the Ceremony Time & Sunset Location for Magical Light

Natural light sets the stage for phenomenal photos. When choosing your venue, ask about the timing of your ceremony and where the sun sets in relation to the ceremony and reception spaces.

Golden hour (the hour before sunset) creates warm, soft light that flatters every skin tone and adds a romantic glow to portraits.

Tip: If your ceremony is outdoors, try to schedule it so that after you say “I do,” we can capture portraits during golden hour! Also, check with during your tour to see if there are scenic spots around the venue for sunset photos.

3. Space for Getting Ready & Detail Shots

Venues with a comfortable, well-lit getting-ready area make a huge difference…and I mean huge! From a photography perspective, natural window light in these spaces helps me capture those candid, joyful moments — like putting on your dress or the excitement while the bridal party laughs together. Wide open rooms help eliminate clutter and add more versatile shots to your final gallery.

Also, a space to beautifully arrange your wedding details (invitations, shoes, jewelry) with great natural light is another bonus. These small details tell your story and deserve their own spotlight in your album.

4. Look for Unique Architectural or Natural Features

Photography thrives on beautiful backgrounds and interesting textures. Venues with unique architecture — like exposed brick, elegant staircases, or lush gardens — add character and visual interest to your photos.

Think about what feels you: Do you want rustic charm, modern elegance, or a coastal breeze? The venue’s style should align with your vision and enhance the emotions we capture.

5. Accessibility and Flow for Photos & Timeline

Think practically about how easily we can move between ceremony, portraits, and reception spaces. A venue where these areas are close together saves time and keeps your day flowing smoothly — which means less waiting and more moments captured naturally.

Also, consider how easy it is for guests to get around, especially if you plan on group photos or want to include family and friends in key shots.

6. Lighting Options for Evening and Indoor Photos

Some venues have great natural light but limited artificial lighting, which can impact photos after sunset. Ask about the venue’s lighting setup indoors and outdoors, including reception rooms and any ceremony tents.

If the lighting feels dim, that’s totally okay. As your photographer, I’ll plan for additional lighting or creative photo spots to keep your images fresh, bright and vibrant.

Wrapping Up: A final note on what to consider when choosing your wedding venue

What to consider when choosing a wedding venue is about so much more than just a pretty space. It’s about setting the stage for your love story to unfold and for your memories to be captured authentically.

As a photographer who wants your wedding photos to feel authentic, I encourage you to consider these photography-focused factors when booking your venue. This way, your photos will reflect the true magic of your day, and the moments you’ll want to relive forever.
