That also means you’re probably looking for some guidance in how to prepare for a photoshoot. Whether it’s capturing timeless moments with your family, celebrating the beauty of motherhood with maternity portraits, or celebrating a recent engagement your partner, preparation is key to ensuring a wonderful and joyous photography experience. As a wedding and portrait photographer, I understand that going into your photoshoot knowing what to expect can help shake some of the worries off, so here are some quality tips to help you prepare.

Pro tips on how to prepare for a photoshoot:

1. Choose the Perfect Location:

Firstly, if you are able to customize the location of your session, select a location that resonates with your photography vision and personality. Whether it’s a picturesque park, a sunny beach, a local café, a regal museum, or the comfort of your own home, the right location can set the stage for stunning photographs that tell your authentic love story.

2. Coordinate Your Outfits:

Coordination is key — but I don’t suggest matching! Instead, opt for complementary colors and styles that reflect your family’s personality. Consider your photography session location, and dress for the season / weather. Incorporate layers and textures to add depth to your outfits. Mixing fabrics like denim, lace, leather, or knits creates a dynamic and layered look that photographs really well. Also, avoid busy patterns and logos that may distract from the focus of the images — you!

3. Timing is Everything:

Opt to have your session near or at golden hour—either early morning or late afternoon—when the lighting is soft and flattering. Likewise, avoid scheduling your session during peak hours to minimize distracting, busy crowds. If you can’t control the time, choose a location where there is ample room, or covered areas from harsh, 12 PM lighting.

4. Prepare the Little Ones:

If you have children participating in the photo session, make sure they’re well-rested and fed. Bring along their favorite toys or snacks to keep them entertained and cooperative throughout the session. Also, I highly suggest snacks that are not messy, colorful or sticky. Mini marshmallows are a top choice!

5. Embrace Authenticity:

Be yourselves! Relax, laugh, and enjoy each other’s company. The best moments are often captured when you’re simply being you.

6. Trust Your Photographer:

7. Don’t Forget the Details:

Pay attention to the little details that can elevate your photographs. Objects such as a fresh bouquet of flowers, sentimental props, or meaningful accessories can add depth and personality to your images. They add a personal and documentary-style factor that elevates your photo session.
