7 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

Wedding Tips

Hi, I'm Amanda! Boston wedding and portrait photographer serving New England, NJ & Destinations. So glad you're here.

Hiring a wedding photographer is one of the most, if not the most important decision you’ll make during your planning process. Your photos are the lasting legacy of your celebration—so choosing the right photographer for you is absolutely crucial. That being said, there are so many photographers out there. How do you know you’re choosing the right one? These seven questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking will help you confidently choose someone who fits your style, vision, and personality.

The seven questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking:

1. What’s your photography style, and how do you describe your approach?

Some photographers (like myself) lean toward photojournalistic, candid storytelling. This allows your wedding day to unfold naturally with minimal interference from your vendors. Others opt more posed, editorial imagery that take up more time on your wedding day. Ask about their style so you can envision how your wedding will be captured.

✅ Bonus tip: Scan their website for words like “documentary,” “timeless,” “true-to-life,” or “fine art” to understand their artistic direction.

2. Can we see a full wedding gallery from start to finish?

Out of all the questions to ask your wedding photographer, this one is key. Highlight reels are great, but real magic lies in consistency from start to finish. Viewing a full gallery shows how they capture everything—from the getting ready part of your day to the emotional vows and ultimately the dance floor energy.

3. What’s included in your photography packages—and are there add-ons?

Ask about the photography coverage options they offer. This includes the number of hours, whether you get a second shooter, engagement session, digital gallery, print rights, or albums. Clarity here helps with budgeting and expectations. Do they have set package offerings? Or do they do custom proposals? Personally, I offer custom proposals for each of my clients, to best tailor their wedding photography offerings to fit exactly what they’re envisioning for their wedding.

4. How do you help plan the wedding day timeline for photos?

An experienced photographer will collaborate with you or your planner to design a timeline that keeps the day smooth and photo-friendly. Ask if they offer pre-wedding consultations or timeline prep in their wedding offerings.

5. What happens if you’re sick or have an emergency on our wedding day?

It’s smart to ask about their backup plan. Often they will pull in an associate photographer or ask their network of trusted professionals. Either way, it’s crucial to have a backup plan in place!

6. When will we receive our photos—and how are they delivered?

Turnaround time varies for each photographer you inquire with. Ask how long it takes to get your full gallery, and / or if they offer sneak peeks. It doesn’t hurt to ask if delivery includes digital downloads, USB drives, or album design options. All my wedding proposals include a physical, wedding album credit so you will leave your wedding day having a tangible keepsake that you can share with family and friends for generations to come.

7. What makes you different from other wedding photographers?

This gives you the chance to really see if you vibe with your potential photographer. This opens up the floor so they can share their personality and process. After all, you’re hiring someone to be with you on a deeply personal day—it’s imperative to choose someone you click with.
